Bollywood Mourns The Loss of Veteran Actor Shashi Kapoor

Bollywood has been ruled by the Kapoors for almost a century. And when the news of Shashi Kapoor’s death surfaced, it was taken by surprise. Many celebrities took to social media expressing their grief. From Bollywood actors to filmmakers, everyone stepped up to mourn the loss of one of the most successful and celebrated Bollywood hero.

Shashi Kapoor was born Balbir Prithviraj Kapoor in 18 March 1938. He was the son of Prithviraj Kapoor, the pioneer of Hindi Film Industry. He started his acting career in 1941 as a child actor starring in plays directed and produced by his father. He made his Bollywood debut as a lead actor in the 1961 film Dharmaputra. Kapoor has appeared in 116 Hindi films. He was one of India’s first actor to go international by starring in some British and American films including The Householder, Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie, etc. He also had a production house named Film Valas established in 1978 which produced films like Junoon, Vijeta, Kalyug, etc.ย

He has received multiple awards for his time in the film industry like National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Bengali Film Journalists’ Association Awards, ย and other awards like the Padma Bhushan Award, Mohammed Rafi Award, and Lifetime Achievement Awards. He retired from acting in 1998 after appearing in films like Jinnah and Side Street.

Shashi Kapoor was married to actress Jennifer Kendal, his co-star in the film Heat and Dust in July 1958. They had three children Kunal Kapoor, Karan Kapoor, and Sanjana Kapoor. His wife Jennifer died in 1984 battling colon cancer. Kapoor was previously admitted to Kokilaben Hospital on 20 July 2012, where he underwent a cataract surgery. On December 4, 2017, he was admitted to the same hospital following a chest infection. He died the same day at 5:20 pm due to a liver cirrhosis. He was 79.
