Clean roads and pollution free environment is quite rare in our part of the world. In urban areas itself, the condition is quite worse so it is likely to infer that the condition of village might be even worse. But, this might not be the case for this village.
Mawlynnong Village, in the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya is one of the cleanest places of India. In fact, it is renowned as the cleanest village in Asia.
In a country where there are numerous initiations taken for sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness, Mawlynnong stands up to be an epitome for all that in India.
The initiation taken by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi is the “Clean India Mission” (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan). This was launched in October 2014. The major goal was to completely spruce up the country’s major cities by 2019.
In 2003, Mawlynnong was declared as the cleanest village in Asia and the cleanest in India in 2005 by Discover India magazine.
This is really a great achievement for a country like India, where in one hand, there is Delhi and its increasing level of population and on the other there is Mawlynnong where a single dust particle is hard to trace.
The village brings in a lot of pride for the country and is a model of cleanliness and sanitation. But how do you actually achieve this?
The values that the village holds act as a great foundation for each and every one in the village. Children are taught from a young age the importance of sanitation and keeping the environment clean. They have a great imprint.
The idea of beautifying and loving the place you live in is sublimely instilled on the children. From tiny toddlers to elderly people, everyone works together hand in hand to keep the village clean and free from all the pollution.
Another accolade that the village deserves is the facilitation of toilets in every household of the village. Whenever a new house is built, the people always prioritize the construction of toilets which helps in achieving sanitation.
There are bamboo dustbins all over the village so that littering is completely refrained. Even the dry leaves fallen from the trees go straight inside the dustbin.
The village also prohibits smoking and the use of plastic bags is abstained. The best thing about the village also account to the fact that people there are so disciplined. They religiously follow all the rules and regulations and make sure that nobody violates it.
Their dedication is to applaud for as people not only clean their houses but they even come out and sweep the streets to maintain the cleanliness. The village also contributes greatly towards planting trees.
Doing all this has become a part of their lifestyle which is just commendable. No wonder the village is even referred to as “God’s own Garden”.
The village does not just have clean roads and surroundings. It has some amazing picturesque views as well. In fact the natural beauty is in abundance.
Not just this, the village also works towards achieving women literacy and empowerment. Mawlynnong manifests women empowerment and a 100 percent literacy rate.
Mawlynnong village is truly the cleanest village in terms of both the physical infrastructure and the human attributes where people are equally clean from their hearts, their views and actions.
