Humble beginnings of the Three Khans of Bollywood

The Khans of Bollywood are known worldwide for being the best in the acting industry. The term “Khans of Bollywood” is used to describe the successful male actors of the Bollywood industry. Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are known as the Three Khans of Bollywood. These actors have undoubtedly made it to the top of the list and taken turns being called the King of Bollywood.

The Bollywood industry has been dominated by the Three Khans since the 1990s. The trio has grossed the highest earning movies for over three decades.Hum Apke Hai Kaun (Salman-1994), Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge (Shah Rukh-1995) and Ghajini (Aamir-2008) came together to create the 100 crore club. Aamir’s Dangal (2016) created the 1000 crore and the 2000 crore club with high box office collection from India and China.

The Khans have an accolade of awards to their names and are counted among the richest or highest-earning actors throughout the world. The actor’s lives are public and every step that they take is in the limelight. The media has given them the privilege of capturing its attention just by breathing in front of the cameras.

Their careers, however, did not reach this level of worldwide recognition overnight. Decades of hard work were put into the hundreds of movies that they have lead throughout the majority of their lives. While we all know that these actors enjoy the most successful careers in all of Bollywood, do we know that they too had humble beginnings?

1. Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan, often known as the King Khan or Baadshah of Bollywood, began his career in the face of struggles. He lost his father to cancer in 1981 and later lost his mother to complications in diabetes in 1991. He admitted to taking up less creative roles early in life in order to earn money to support himself and his sister.

In 1988, he began his acting career in a drama series called Fauji and was applauded for his performance. He acted in a few more TV series between 1988 and 1990 before deciding to move to Mumbai from Delhi and act in films as a way of coping with his mother’s death. Shah RUkh made a debut with Deewana in 1992, a box-office hit alongside the then top actress Divya Bharti.Shah Rukh Khan is known as the hero of turning failures into achievements. He played roles rejected by other Khans such as Aamir, Salman and Saif Ali. King Khan took up the roles of a villain in movies like Darr and Baazigar, which were rejected by others actors. He was critically acclaimed for these roles and went on to win his first of many awards for the best actor in the industry.

With his career properly established by now, he went on to play innumerable box office hits as their romantic lead. Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express are just a few to name. He has since been named as the King of Bollywood and is estimated to be the richest actor in the world.

2. Salman Khan

Salman Khan debuted with the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi in 1988 and opened up the pathway to success with his role in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). The eldest son of the screen writer Salim Khan went on to perform in various hits such as Karan Arjun, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hai, and so on.Many controversial and legal troubles plagued Salman. He was convicted due to cases of negligent driving which led to homicide and blackbuck poaching.After a decade of low popularity in the 2000s, Salman Khan returned to the big screen with major hits such as Dabang, Kick, Ek Tha Tiger, Sultan. He is the most commercial actor domestically and has been listed as the highest earning and most handsome actor on a couple of different occasions.

3. Aamir Khan

Among the three Khans, Aamir Khan is the only one who began his career as a child actor. He played a well received role as a child actor at age eight in his late uncle Nasir Hussain’s movie Yaadon Ki Baarat in 1973. Aamir played a few roles as a child and disappeared from the movie scene only to appear 11 years later a film actor.

He is the eldest son of the producer Tahir Hussain. Khan’s parents were against his wishes to pursue acting as a career and wanted that he had a steady job. His father’s unsteady income led to many financial problems for his family. It was stated that he was on the verge of being expelled from school due to non-payment of fees. He discontinued studies after the 12th grade to work as an assistant director to his uncle Nasir Hussain.

He debuted in a tragic romance movie called Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 and gained great acclaims of the movie industry. Despite playing five films in 1990, only one of the five called Dil was a major success in the box office. This success led to roles in other hits such as Dil Hai ki Manta Nahi. Raja Hindustani in 1996 bagged him the Filmfare award for Best Actor after seven nominations.

In 1999, Aamir Khan Productions was established and hit movies such as Lagaan were produced under it. He made his debut as a director in Taare Zameen Par in 2007 and went on to make box office hits such as Ghajini, 3 idiots and Dangal, which is India’s highest grossing movie in history.
