The Daily Beast recently reported that the Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin experimented with all of his children who have not yet been vaccinated to expose them to chicken pox. All of his nine children were exposed to chicken pox in hopes of them being immune to the disease.
Bevin was of the opinion that each of his children had gotten chicken pox at some point during their lives. He had asked help of his neighbor to purposefully infect the kids with his disease. This has been reported from an interview taken place at a local radio station named WKCT.
Parents actually hosted a “chicken pox parties” which had similarity to what Bevin had described. This party was hosted even before the chicken pox vaccine officially became available in 1995. During this convention healthy children were kept in the same room as the child who had chicken pox. They wished that the healthy children would contract the disease and “get it over with.” This has been out of practice for some time now but people nowadays have recently reported on a revival of the chicken pox party.
Most of the children when get chicken pox will not get it again in their adulthood but it doesn’t make them safe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) they were of the opinion that “There is no way to tell in advance how severe your child’s symptoms will be.” It is does not make sense taking the chance of exposing your child to someone with this disease.”
Risk of healthy children dying?
Although in most cases a person who has contracted chicken pox gets better eventually, it is almost impossible to predict the outcome. According to a pediatrician Dr. Natasha Burgert who told the INSIDER that it’s a “gamble” and even if the child is generally healthy, there is no way to know how sick they might get if they contracted chicken pox.
She said “It’s impossible to predict.” “Some kids will just get a few (chicken pox) whereas some kids will actually die. You just don’t know how the vaccine may work on the child’s body, so we should just vaccinate everyone.”
What can be the symptoms of chicken pox?
A person with a minor case of chicken pox might have a fever, can experience extreme tiredness, headaches, loss of appetite etc. in addition to the hallmark itchy red rash along with blistering. Sometimes in extreme cases, an infected person can even develop brain inflammation, sepsis, a bacterial infection, pneumonia and there’s possibility of dying.
Misconception of chicken pox boosting person’s immunity.
People have this belief that after exposure to the disease you don’t have to get vaccinated. They believe that the disease will protect them down the long haul, but Burgert was of the opinion that it can’t be true.
” It is highly wrong of us to believe that getting infected with this natural disease is going to make our immunity stronger so as to avoid getting vaccinated which can be a much safer option, which is just an option.” Burgert told the INSIDER that “The major reason vaccines are made is to avoid parents killing their kids, parents fail to realize that.”
The main significance of vaccine is that it consists of dead or weakened disease germs. This vaccine has proven to boost immune systems without the risk of exposing people to the airborne kind of a disease
Parents should vaccinate their child instead of experimenting with this risky procedure. If you get vaccinated, it can help you create something called a herd immunity. Herd immunity is a concept where as many people as possible get vaccinated so as to protect themselves along with other community members who are not able receive vaccines for various health reasons like HIV or cancer. Herd immunity had previously stopped the spread of the once widespread diseases like whooping cough and diphtheria.
