Uttar Pradesh (UP), a state in the northern part of India has recently come up with a strategy that could help all the women in the state feel secure and travel around for free.
Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), a political party in India has come up with a plan that on the day of Rakhsha Bandhan (Rakhi), i.e. 26th August 2018, the party is set to provide free and secure bus rides to all the female passengers traveling around different parts of the state.
What is Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan is one of the most celebrated rituals in Hindu culture and countries, especially in India. It is the day where sisters tie “rakhi” around the wrists of their brothers protecting him from any misfortune.
Rakhi is a form of a woven bracelet that women of all ages tie around the wrist of their brothers (biological, cousins, or adopted).
Raksha Bandhan is a tradition followed by Hindus all over the world for hundreds of years as a symbol of mutual dependence and a mark of respect between a brother and a sister.
On this day, women have to travel to different places just so they could tie the rakhi around the wrist of their brothers and pray for their good health and long life.
And in return, the men vow to take care of and protect their sisters under any circumstances.
Every year, Raksha Bandhan falls on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar’s month of Shraavana. And as the day is approaching fast, the BJP party in UP came up with such an uplifting policy.
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the women in Uttar Pradesh, the northern state of India, will be provided with free bus rides to travel around the state.
UP to Provide Free Travel Services to Women.
In a statement made by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, it states that all the female passengers are to be provided with free bus rides on all of its vehicle services from 25th August 12 A.M. to 26th August 12 A.M.
This service will be operated a day before the festival takes place as well as the day of the celebration so it would be easier for the passengers as well as the officials to control the rush during the travel.
According to the Bharatiya Janta Party officials, the decision is taken in order to provide a safe, convenient, and comfortable ride to the women of the state while traveling to different places to visit their brothers.
And since the slogan of BJP which they so proudly represent says “Saaf Niyat, Sahi Vikas” (clean intent, right development), this policy according to the party is a gift to all the sisters on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
The free rides are made available in all the public buses that are available in Uttar Pradesh and the service applies to women of all ages, castes, and professions.
The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has also decided to put out maximum buses as well as sufficient traffic police on the road to provide maximum services to the commuters in the midst of the extra rush of the passengers.
This is not the first time that BJP came up with a policy like this to help out citizens, especially female citizens to feel safer in the places they live.
Back in 2017 when it was announced that BJP is setting up free rides to all its female passengers, more than 100,000 women were able to utilize the service and BJP was immensely praised for making such moves.
Is Providing Free Bus Rides the Right Decision?
In a country like India where women are discriminated on a large scale compared to men, where every other day there are news and headlines about women and girls getting raped and abused, taking such a step to protect and make traveling easier for them is a commendable move by BJP.
But do you think giving out free rides just for a day would solve the problems women face on a daily basis, especially while traveling?
I agree that this is a positive and commendable approach in order to make things easier for women, but making sure each and every woman in the whole country is safe is what the government should do on a daily basis and not just on special occasions.
What do you think of the policy that BJP has come up with? Do you think it would help women travel and feel safe at least for a day? And do you think such services should be provided all of the country and not just a state? Please comment below.
