In a world of negativity and hopelessness, there are times when you feel like nothing is going right and you feel like giving up so easily. But when you hear stories of success and inspiration, you know that the world is not a bad place after all and there are people out there who work so hard to make it a better place. Same is the story of Sindhutai Sapkal, the Mother of Orphans.
Sindhutai was only nine when she was forcefully married to a man who 20 years older than she was. By the time she was 20, she had three sons. Abuse and violence was a part of her daily life as her husband was an abusive man who beat her up almost every day. But that didn’t stop her from being a revolutionary. She revolted against a criminal landlord in her village which was a success. But the landlord was a powerful man who spread a false rumor that he had an affair with Sindhutai that led her husband to beat her and abandon her, even though she was 9 months pregnant with a baby girl.
Her husband’s beating was so brutal, she lost consciousness. When she finally got up, she realized she had given birth to her daughter. Kicked out of the house, she had to take shelter in a crematorium with her children. She collected the flour offered to the dead bodies and cooked it over the burning bodies just so she could feed herself and her starving children.
Her condition was so bad that she wanted to end it. But she decided to live after she came across a beggar who neither had food nor anyone to call his own and yet he was begging to survive. That gave her hope and she decided to live her life dedicating it to others. She adopted every orphan she came across and begged on the street to feed them and keep them alive.
Today, some of her children are doctors and lawyers and grown up to do great things. Some run their own orphanages while one of them is doing a Ph.D. on her life. She has won over 750 awards and is the mother of 1400 orphan children. She even took her husband in who abandoned her and her kids. But the surprising thing was, she didn’t accept him as her husband but her eldest son.
